Internet Explorer, 'Has Layout', and Me
Fri, 02/22/2008 - 17:33 — R.J. Lorimer
This week at my Clark-Kent-day-job, I was working with JQuery, which is usually a pleasure. However, in this particular occasion, Microsoft, circa 2001, stepped in and defecated all over my happy times.
Reminder of Type Erasure Problems
Wed, 02/13/2008 - 02:16 — R.J. LorimerI always hate when I’m reminded why I don’t like some technology. Today I was working with Java 5 and specifically a pre-Java 5 xml_rpc API similar to Apache XML-RPC. I made some incorrect assumptions about the return value of a particular rpc call. I was confident that it returned an array of strings (which is translated into a list of strings in Java) - but in fact it returns an array of structs (which is translated into a list of maps).
Go Team Go: The Tech Community Shines Again
Tue, 01/22/2008 - 23:41 — R.J. LorimerThe consistently rude are being consistent again, as yet-another-chain of comments on Javalobby shows how internet criticism flows so freely.
The Sharp Pain of Burnout
Fri, 01/18/2008 - 23:41 — R.J. LorimerLife’s funny; today in my Google Reader tally I ran across this post by Steven Wittens - titled ‘On not doing Drupal anymore’, and it helped put some personal frustrations in to perspective for me on the concept of ‘burnout’ in the modern open development age.
Obvious: Daylight Saving Change Causes Problems
Mon, 10/29/2007 - 19:33 — R.J. Lorimer
As detailed in this CNET News Feature (and as most technically-minded people could have guessed), there have been several minor to middle-of-the-road problems with the most recent daylight saving change.
I know that I’m not the only one that feels like Congress is taking a somewhat-uneducated stab at this - toying with something that has pretty significant repercussions for many of us without having a real idea of the benefits.
Dreamhost vs. Uptime
Wed, 10/24/2007 - 15:02 — R.J. Lorimer![]()
It looks like I’m not the only one that had Dreamhost problems - when I first moved to Dreamhost, I saw astronomical uptime numbers similar to what Daviey saw. While these numbers are actually normalized to the number of CPUs (as opposed to 1.00 as he mentions), 430+ is not exactly acceptable.
What is up with platform-swt-dev?
Mon, 10/22/2007 - 21:20 — R.J. Lorimer
I follow most of the Eclipse development mailing-lists because they are low-traffic, and typically only carry conversations relevant to the development side, as opposed to the storm of questions and puzzlers that hit the newsgroups. Periodically you will receive a “Hey, how can I do this?” followed briefly by a “Please ask further questions on the newsgroup”.
Revisited: Improving Drupal Performance on Dreamhost
Tue, 10/16/2007 - 03:17 — R.J. Lorimer
How do you improve Drupal performance on Dreamhost? It’s a trick question - the answer is move to MediaTemple.
If you’re reading this, then you have hit the new MediaTemple(dv)-hosted Realjenius.com - and you have met one much happier R.J.
Sun Selling Servers... Windows Servers?!
Wed, 09/12/2007 - 22:36 — R.J. LorimerArs Technica is covering the news that Sun Microsystems has signed up to become a Microsoft Windows OEM. I don’t know how to take this except for ‘Wha..?’.
The Plight of the Internet
Mon, 08/20/2007 - 22:56 — R.J. LorimerWhy is it, that when given a keyboard, a monitor, and an internet connection, some people feel that they have the right/priviledge/obligation to be a total ass in the face of any criticism or comment.
