The Call of Chrismathulu

Well, as of 11/6, the two “light rock” stations in Kansas City have switched to Christmas music full time. That pretty much guarantees two months of mediocre music (which is not new for these stations) with what seems like 6 songs to choose between (which is a few less than the other 10 months).

Quietude

Sorry for the overwhelming quiet here on RealJenius.com - I’m getting married in two weeks now, and it has been a bit of a time-consuming ‘project’.

Unfortunately, that probably also means that the next two to four weeks will still be quiet.

Rest assured, I haven’t died.

…. and I also got Mass Effect, which might also be a slight additional time-sink in my life ;)

The Urge: Receiving the Gift of Flavor

Information:
The quintessential album of a band that never quite made it.

Receiving the Gift of Flavor Album Cover

Overview

The Urge was a St. Louis-based Rock/Punk/Ska band that started making noise in 1989, but didn’t really hit their big acclaim until the mid ’90s. While their most commercially-successful single was easily “Jump Right In” (man, that video is terrible) from Master of Styles, their most complete and consistent album, at least in my opinion, is Receiving the Gift of Flavor.

The Good:
Dark, soulful sound of Steve Ewing, a killer horn section, and surprisingly good musical composition.
The Bad:
Live 'party' songs don't jive well with home-listening; some shaky mastering; the band is not around anymore!
Conclusion:
I can't give this album any more rating than I have, simply because of the rough edges - but the innovation alone carries it far.
Rating (out of 10):
7.5

Moved to Google Apps

Tonight I officially kicked off the process of moving to Google Apps for my email, calendar, and also for google docs, which I use quite a bit.

I plan to blog on it more, but for now I will say the process was relatively simple, although moving from a fully configured GMail account to a Google Apps account should be less painful than it is.

This video once again re-affirms why BMW is my favorite car company.

The Sharp Pain of Burnout

Life’s funny; today in my Google Reader tally I ran across this post by Steven Wittens - titled ‘On not doing Drupal anymore’, and it helped put some personal frustrations in to perspective for me on the concept of ‘burnout’ in the modern open development age.

Blackberry-Equipped

This weekend I became exponentially more wired by picking up a Blackberry Curve, and so far I’ve been very happy; the keyboard is very intuitive, and the connectivity is very good with an unlimited data plan.

I’m actually with T-Mobile, so the network speed is rather lousy on EDGE, but the Curve supports WI-FI, so it’s quite fast in my house and at hotspots.

…And yes, this blog post was done from my Blackberry.

32-Bit Vista - A Bad Choice?

vista

In a previous blog entry about my computer purchasing process, I alluded to the reasons I chose a 64-bit operating system in my next purchase, I why I chose to do so. One of the main reasons I chose to make the leap was because of the three part series of articles at Anandtech.com titled ‘A Messy Transition’

Obvious: Daylight Saving Change Causes Problems

clock

As detailed in this CNET News Feature (and as most technically-minded people could have guessed), there have been several minor to middle-of-the-road problems with the most recent daylight saving change.

I know that I’m not the only one that feels like Congress is taking a somewhat-uneducated stab at this - toying with something that has pretty significant repercussions for many of us without having a real idea of the benefits.

Choosing an OS - Harder than Ever

Core2Duo I recently bought a new custom-built computer from CyberPower PCs, and with it I bought a copy of Vista Home Premium 64-bit.

I wasn’t terribly keen on buying Vista given all of the problems that people have had with it since it came out, but after breaking down the alternatives, I wound up with several reasons why it was the best choice:
